Using Insight 5.0 with GlazeChem
================================
rjw 2/24/97

GlazeChem versions 1.1a and later contain commands to import
and export Insight 5.0 TMT and RCP files, and commands to
exchange recipes with Insight through the Windows Clipboard.
This file contains a quick overview of these features.

Note: these features are not guaranteed to work in the future.
The authors of Insight may make changes that cause incompatibility
between the two.

---------------------------------------
Synchronizing Material Lists and Oxides
---------------------------------------
If you plan to use GlazeChem and Insight together, it is a
good idea (although not strictly necessary) to work from a
common set of material and oxide definitions. To synchronize
the information in the two programs, you have two choices:
you can either import Insight's materials and oxides into
GlazeChem, or you can export GlazeChem's materials and oxides
to Insight.

Importing a TMT file into GlazeChem
-----------------------------------
To import Insight's material and oxide information into GlazeChem,
do the following:
    1. Activate the Elements view.
    2. Choose File | New Element Database. All elements will be set
to default roles and expansions, all notes will be cleared, etc.
    3. Activate the Material List view.
    4. Choose File | New Material Database. The material list will be
cleared, except for a single new starting material.
    5. Click on the new material, then press Delete to delete it.
    6. Choose File | Import | Insight TMT File. A dialog opens.
    7. The dialog gives you choices about what (and how) to import
from the Insight file. Select all the options and click OK.
    8. Another dialog opens; select the name of the Insight TMT file
to be imported (usually STANDARD.TMT). Click OK.

Your material list will be populated with Insight's materials, and
your element database with Insight's oxides. You should save both the
element and material databases under new names (such as INSIGHT.ELE and
INSIGHT.MAT).

If you want, you can set up the Material Type List in the Preferences
dialog with types from the materials you just imported. Open the
Preferences dialog (File | Preferences), click Materials, and click the
Set from Material List button. You may want to put the material types
into a more logical order (frits/feldspars first, then fluxes, clays,
other stuff). See GlazeChem's online help for more information.

Note that it is not absolutely necessary that you start from a blank
element or material database before importing the TMT file. You could
use the TMT information to replace or supplement the information in
your current database. You would, though, have to resolve duplicate
material conflicts on your own.

Exporting a TMT file from GlazeChem
-----------------------------------
To export GlazeChem materials and oxides into a TMT file, do the
following:
    1. Activate the Elements view, and make sure that you do not
have more than 30 elements total listed as Alkali, Neutral, and Acid.
If you are using GlazeChem's default ceramic roles, you'll have to
change several oxides to Not Expected. Good candidates for this
are Ge, As, Se, W, and Ce.
    2. Activate the Material List view.
    3. Select the materials to be exported to the TMT file. You can
use Edit | Select All to select all materials.
    4. Choose File | Export | Insight TMT File.
    5. Enter a filename for the new TMT file (such as GLZCHEM.TMT).

The TMT file can be opened in Insight with the File | Open command.

---------------------------------
Importing and Exporting RCP Files
---------------------------------
GlazeChem can import Insight 4.0 and 5.0 RCP (recipe) files, and
can export Insight 5.0 RCP files.

Importing RCP files into GlazeChem
----------------------------------
To import RCP files into GlazeChem, do the following:
    1. Activate the Glaze List view for the database which will
receive the new glazes. You may want to start a new glaze database
for this purpose, or append the recipes to an existing database.
    2. Choose File | Import | Insight Recipes.
    3. Select the RCP files to be imported, and click OK. (Unlike
most File Open dialogs, this dialog lets you select multiple files
from a single directory.)

The recipes will be appended to the glaze list. Don't forget to
save the database.

Exporting RCP files from GlazeChem
----------------------------------
To export glazes from GlazeChem in RCP format, do the following:
    1. In the Glaze List view, select the glazes to be exported.
(Note that you can only export from one database at a time.)
    2. Choose File | Export | Insight Format.
    3. When prompted, enter a filename for each glaze to be exported.

----------------------------------------
Exchanging Recipes Through the Clipboard
----------------------------------------
For those users who wish to make use of Insight for performing
calculations, GlazeChem offers commands to pass recipes to and
from Insight through the Windows Clipboard.

A typical procedure would be to send the GlazeChem recipe to
Insight recipe 1, then copy recipe 1 to recipe 2, then alter
recipe 2, then send recipe 2 back to GlazeChem.

Passing a Recipe to Insight
---------------------------
To pass a glaze recipe to Insight, do the following:
    1. Open the glaze in a Glaze Edit view (double-click on the
glaze in the glaze list).
    2. Choose Utilites | Send to Insight | Entire Recipe.
Optionally, you can choose one of the other commands
(Components Only or Additions Only) to send only part of the
recipe.
    3. In Insight, select Recipe 1 or Recipe 2 as desired,
then choose Edit | Interpret Clipboard.

In Insight, the recipe name is the same as the GlazeChem
recipe name, unless you chose Components Only or Additions Only;
in these cases, the name is appended with "(components only)" or
"(additions only)". Under normal circumstances, you should not
change the recipe name.

Retrieving a Recipe from Insight
--------------------------------
If you adjust or alter the glaze recipe with Insight, you
may want to send the new recipe back to GlazeChem. This is
done as follows:
    1. In Insight, select the recipe (1 or 2) you want to
send back to GlazeChem, then choose Edit | Copy Recipe as Text.
    2. In GlazeChem, where the glaze should still be open in the
Glaze Edit view, choose Utilites | Get from Insight. GlazeChem
attempts to read the recipe from the Windows Clipboard, and
put the ingredients back into the appropriate column. You need
to click Save Changes if you want to save the new recipe.

Note that GlazeChem does not check the glaze name, but it does
look for "(components only)" or "(additions only)" to determine
which column should receive the new glaze ingredients. If neither
is found (the entire recipe was sent), GlazeChem attempts to put
each ingredient back in the column it came from.

Technically, you do not have to "get" the same recipe you
"send" - you could start a new glaze, and "get" the recipe there.

If the Windows Clipboard contains text that is not a recipe,
Insight's Interpret Clipboard command and GlazeChem's Get from
Insight command can get confused.
